Six-foot Santa spotted in Sauchiehall Street

Santa is in Glasgow. In fact, you may have spotted four Santas on Sauchiehall Street.

The six-foot statues have been designed by pupils at Garnetbank Primary School in the city centre.

They are part of a campaign by a group of businesses on Sauchiehall Street who are working alongside the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and City Council partners to support Business Improvement District (BID) work.

The winning designs were created by P4's Gabby Wan, P5's Neve Baron-Russell, P6's Hafsa Sardras and P7’s Urwah Qureshi.

The BID team has invested £20,000 in improving lighting to brighten up the area. The new lighting spans the junction from the pedestrianised zone at Rose Street to Charring Cross and will operate every night from during the winter months.

BID steering group chairman Brian Fulton, director of Hold Fast Entertainment, which owns The Garage said: “We’re excited to welcome both new and old visitors to Sauchiehall Street this winter.

"The Santa statues and Christmas lights have really given the area a fun and festive feel, and we hope the people of Glasgow will come here to enjoy some of the best entertainment, leisure and retail options in town.

"This is a good build up ahead of the £6million public realm improvement programme by the City Council that starts in 2017.”
